a salty story...

 

I'm posting some more photos of the kiln building workshop I attended, as I can now add some shots of the kilns totally finished and functioning.  I'll start with some of the shots of the construction of the kilns.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here are the kilns almost ready to fire:

...and here is the salt kiln (That's the red kiln in the above photo) being loaded for firing #3!  Note the inside has been glazed to protect the bricks against the corrosive salt that is introduced to the firing atmosphere.  Toasty!  The salt adds to the glazes of the pots, and can even be the sole glaze of the pots.  The other kiln is for adding soda during the firing, and produces a slightly different look.  Because atmospheric kilns eat away at the bricks, hard refractory bricks were used instead of soft ones (which are a bit cheaper) on all of the inside where the corrosive material has contact with the bricks.
